The VC Pirates successfully defended their state title with a 70-66 victory over the Contra Costa Comets on Saturday, March 10, in a game played at University of the Pacific's Alex G. Spanos Center. Kelly Murray was named the tournament's MVP, and Monica Hang played well all weekend to earn All Tournament honors.
VC started off the tournament by defeating Lassen 74-55. Kelly Murray led the way with 19 points, followed by Monique Taylor with 12 and Monica Hang with 11. Kellie Gessell also scored 11 points, on 5 for 5 shooting from the field. Sarah Kolbeck contributed 8 points and seven rebounds. In the semi-final game, the Lady Pirates beat Fresno City College by the score of 74-58. Kelly Murray again led the way for VC with 20 points, with Monica Hang close behind with 18. Monique Taylor converted seven of eight field goals to contribute 14 points to the victory.
In the final game against Contra Costa, the #3 seed from the North, Sarah Kolbeck got fired up and scored 20 points. Also scoring in double figures were Kelly Murray with 16, Monica Hang with 11 and Monique Taylor with 10. Taylor also crashed the boards for 12 rebounds. For the season, Kelly Murray and Monique Taylor earned all-state first team accolades.
